Clown around with this non-radio, any topic blog.... Talk, Vent or discuss anything in general here... If you're crazy enough to post it, then we're clown enough to reply... PS: Radio topic water cooler talk is ok too!

MTARA just finished their 35th annual HAMFEST and electronics show. It's been fun being appointed as the club's webmaster for a second full year. It was also exciting working at the raffle table at the MTARA Table this 2024 year. It was the club's first year holding two raffles. The mini mountains raffle throughout the event, and now the Mountain Toppers Raffle, where this year the club raffled off a 43" LED tv

Anyone catch a glimps of the 40 out of 49 low orbit SATS buring up in the sky with the recent storm. If not there is plenty of video of folks that did...

I know this isnt really radio related, but indirectly ham radio ties into space weather, SAT operations and such... So I thought I'd post here for your morning coffee company.

Reed, AB8AS had a question for me about the hamstick antenna I was using at a PARK 2 PARK contact we had. Later he wrote me, on the topic... I thought I'd share it here for hams who perhaps had the same question... Thanks Reed, for the contact! Good luck with your future activations...

Daniel,

Thanks so much in helping me out today while activating K-5587 here in WV.

Also, thanks for K-7542 and K-0882.

I think you mentioned you were using a "hamstick" for your POTA antenna.

If you could share the antenna set up I would really appreciate it.

We are planning to again visit several National Parks this summer including Glacier National Park.

Due to space…

Hello Reed:

Good to hear from you post activation... Many times now, I have been using hamstick antennas to get the activation completed for the exact same concerns you had mentioned...

Back during 2016 NPOTA, and prior (We here at POTA*413 have been doing park activations since 2012)... I use to use a tire mount and 31' Jackite Poly Pole with a home brew 31' open end fed antenna, or lightweight dipoles...

I still use that system, although it takes longer to set up, and you need a park that is "antenna friendly"... The rangers big concerns are normally. if the mast was to fall over and hit another park visitor, OR the coax might actually cause a tripping hazard.
